Whether you outsource the housework or do it yourself, having the right equipment for the job is crucial. It makes cleaning more effective and also efficient. Thanks to technology, vacuum cleaners have progressively replaced traditional brooms as they’re quicker and easier to use. But cordless stick vacuums are the real deal these days because of how portable and convenient they are.
While there are a couple of brands in the market, Dyson and Xiaomi are the 2 more commonly heard of brands when thinking of cordless stick vacuum cleaners. In this post, we compare the 2 to see which you should choose.
Why do we need a vacuum cleaner?
For household with the elderly, kids, or people with respiratory problems, dust can be quite a health hazard. Tiny microbes, germs, and pathogens floating around in the house can cause a lot of health issues such as hay fever, chest congestion, coughing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes. If you have a pet, the accumulation of dander (dead skin cells that animals shed regularly) and pet hair can cause sneezing, coughing, and skin rashes.
Doing regular and frequent vacuumming can help prevent the accumulation of dander, dust, and other debris on carpets, rugs and other surfaces in your home. This can reduce the likelihood of health hazards.
How to pick the best vacuum cleaner for you?
To help you make your decision, we’ve reviewed two of the most popular models in the market – the Dyson V8 and the Xiaomi Roidmi F8 – comparing them on the basis of cleaning ability, run time, price, and other key features.
Both the vacuum cleaners are good on hard floors, but the Roidmi excels here and is able to clean up larger debris. However, the Dyson does a better job of deep cleaning the carpet, in addition to picking up debris on hard floors. If you don’t have a carpet at home, the Roidmi would probably be good enough for everyday maintenance of your home.
Making sure dust and dirt don’t float in the air is crucial, especially if anyone in your household suffers from allergies and respiratory issues. Thankfully, both Xiaomi and Dyson have HEPA filters that accompany their sealed vacuums. Typically, these are only found in high-end vacuums, so it’s a big bonus to have it in the cheaper of the two, which is Xiaomi.
Whether you take charge of cleaning yourself or hire someone, you don’t want the chores to take all day. A higher capacity vacuum cleaner means fewer trips to the bin and more efficient cleaning. The Dyson V8 is the winner here. It has a far larger capacity than the Xiaomi, and Dyson’s wider suction tubes also make clogging less likely.
Run-time & recharging
Running out of battery during a clean is the stuff of nightmares for any part-time cleaner. It means you will be waiting hours for a full recharge. Xiaomi’s Roidmi F8 wins here offering around 50 minutes of cleaning time as compared to the Dyson V8 providing roughly 40 minutes.
Recharge times on cordless vacuums have slowly begun to lessen as newer models are released, and the technology improves. The F8 gets fully charged in an incredible 2.5 hours whereas the Dyson takes 4.5 hours. However, it is worth noting that the V8 is an older model and newer Dyson models offer over an hour of usage time and will recharge an hour faster than the V8.
The stark contrast between the design choices of Dyson and Xiaomi is apparent the moment you open the box. Xiaomi has taken a leaf out of Apple’s book, opting for a minimalist and sleek exterior. The all-white casing has curves in the right places, looks very modern and is appealing to the eye.
Dyson’s vacuums are renowned for their loud colours and unique design which make them stand out from the crowd. The bright exterior of the V8 is no different. This one boils down to personal preferences and perhaps the overall theme of your home.
Price & cost effectiveness
The Roidmi is a significantly cheaper option than almost any Dyson product in the market today. The F8 comes in at a very reasonable S$325, which is an excellent price for its features. Even though it is an older model, the Dyson V8 costs nearly double, at S$598.
At face value, it seems that Xiaomi is the clear winner in this category. But, Dyson’s cordless vacuums come with a two-year warranty with contact centres and stores throughout Singapore. On the other hand, the F8 comes with a one-year warranty but with one enormous caveat. There are no service centres in Singapore which will make repairing broken products particularly tricky.
Both models come with a wall-mounted charging dock that makes them part of the furniture in any household. They also come with a variety of different attachments and tools to provide a deeper clean, including a crevice tool, and a combo tool. Xiaomi provides a powered pet tool while Dyson includes a mini motorized tool.
The scales tip slightly in favour of Xiaomi for tech lovers as they have an app which details battery life, suction rate, and a range of other stats.
Which cordless stick vacuum cleaner should you choose?
Both brands offer high-quality products that will help get your house clean. They come with a range of accessories and features. It’s hard to determine a clear winner in this case.
If you’re looking for a vacuum cleaner that does the job and doesn’t cost that much, choose the Xiaomi. But if you’re looking for something a little more durable and reliable, or if you have a higher budget, you can opt for the Dyson.
