5 ways to freshen up your bathroom

An average 6-7 times a day is spent in the bathroom, making up 1 ½ years of our lives! Moreover, it is also one of our favourite places to escape to in our homes. If only we could get rid of its smell!

The high moisture content in the bathroom makes it the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow, resulting in unpleasant odours coming from the shower, sink and toilet. To fight the odour, we turn to chemical air fresheners that are readily available and easy to use. However, most of them are made with chemicals that can damage both your own health and the environment! Baking Soda: The Odour Absorber

To reduce the strange smell in your toilet, place a small bowl of baking soda in your bathroom to absorb the smell. Replace the baking soda in the bowl every month to make sure it stays fresh. Additionally, you can create a natural odour repellent by mixing 2 cups of water, a tablespoon of white vinegar and a teaspoon of baking soda with 10 drops of an essential oil. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray as often as you like.

Lemons: The Natural Deodoriser

Another trick to keep your bathroom smelling fresh is to place a bowl of lemon slices close to the area that smells bad, such as the toilet bowl. Lemons are great at absorbing smells and neutralizing ordours, leaving your bathroom nice and fresh smelling. To maintain the freshness of the bathroom, change the lemon slices once a week.

Essential Oils: The Chemical Free Air Freshener

Essential oils such as lavender and lemongrass can work miracles in your bathroom. Warm up a few droplets of your favourite smelling oil into a diffuser and place it in on above the sink. Let the oil warm up for a couple of minutes and enjoy the aroma that is hiding even the strongest of odours from your bathroom. Alternatively, you can soak the oils into a few balls of cotton and place them inside an empty toilet paper roll.

Alcohol: Not Just For Consumption

Vodka can also be a useful ingredient to get rid of unwanted bathroom smells. Mix three parts of water with one part of cheap vodka, add in about 10 drops of essential oil and spray where needed. This trick works as a all natural air freshener to soak up bathroom smells.

Toilet Bomb Fizzies: The Ultimate Toilet Bowl Unclogger

Is your clogged up toilet bowl creating unnecessary stress? Fortunately, this nasty situation can be easily resolved with your homemade toilet bomb. Simply, mix half a cup of baking soda with half a cup of cornstarch and lemon juice in a ziploc bag. Once fully mixed, add in 2 to 3 tablespoons of water in the mixture and knead it. Repeat this step until the baking soda mixture feel like a piece of dough. Add 15 drops of your favourite essential oil in the dough mixture and knead again. Store them in ice trays and leave them to dry for a couple of days. Once dry, remove one of the toilet bombs and throw them into your toilet bowl. Let it fizz up for a couple of minutes before you flush.
