Ants

ants

Ants usually crawl into buildings through cracks around doors, windows and through holes, seeking food or water. They pick up dirt and infectious organisms along the way and contaminate the food we consume.

Even though they may seem tiny and harmless, an ant’s’ bite can cause swelling, blisters and pain.

Preventive measures include:

  • Clear away leftover food and crumbs found in kitchen
  • Store all food supplies in airtight containers, or in refrigerator to avoid attracting ants
  • Fix any leaking taps and wipe any spills to avoid providing food source to ants
  • Fill any tiny cracks and crevices to prevent ants crawling through to search for food
  • Branches of tress touching the roof of house should be trimmed to reduce entry of pest ants
  • Engage pest control services for residual spray and baiting treatment

Cockroaches

Did you know? Cockroaches can stay hungry for many months but they can’t survive without water for up to a week. Cockroaches are detrimental to human because they tend to pick up diseases by wandering around filthy places. They also transmit diseases such as salmonella enteritis, dysentery and gastroenteritis that may cause food poisoning should they come into contact with food, utensil and surface.

Cockroaches reproduce fast whereby a nymph matures into a full grown adult in less than 6 weeks.

They are often found near sewers, drains, kitchens or cabinets. Cockroaches’ droppings, which are usually black or brown cylindrical pellets.

Preventive measures include:

  • Storing all food supplies in airtight containers or in refrigerator.
  • Fix any leaking taps and wipe any spills especially in the kitchen to remove potential food sources.
  • Seal all cracks and crevices and remove any bulky items from the ground which can be potentially a breeding ground for cockroaches.
  • Check and clean hard to reach areas such as behind cupboards or refrigerator to prevent the potential breeding.
  • Engage pest control services for residual spray, baiting treatment and sticky traps to detect the location of infestation

Bed bugs

Bed bug infestation is on the rise globally. One main factor is due to the increase in global travellering where the bed bugs and their eggs are stuck onto travellers’ clothes and suitcases.

Bed bugs are known to be a challenge to treat as they take shelter in the narrowest of gaps such as seams of mattresses, bed frames, headboard, and curtains or behind furniture. Finding DIY solutions by your own to get rid of bed bugs may sometimes seem ineffective.

Preventive measures include:

  • Do not leave luggage on the carpet in hotel rooms. Leave them on a luggage rack instead
  • Do not store bags underneath the bed. Bed bugs can be picked up as travelling can quickly transfer to the bed to start a new infestation
  • Vacuuming can greatly reduce the size of the bed bug population, but only when they’re clearly visible. It cannot guarantee total elimination. (Empty and clean the vacuum to avoid transferring eggs to other rooms.)
  • Engage professional pest control services for bed bug residual spray and steam treatment
